Vienna School Night Aftermovie: From Waltz to Wild

Media coverage by Sam Bajoghli, Theo Lechner, Kasper Langeder, and me. Aftermovie filmed, edited, and mixed by me

What this project is

Vienna School Night is a prom-style evening that brings together students from several schools in Vienna, including my own, the Graphische. I covered the event with three friends. Sam Bajoghli, Theo Lechner, and Kasper Langeder focused on photography. I handled the aftermovie from start to finish. That meant planning, shooting, editing, sound, and delivery.

The idea and the plan

I wanted the film to feel like the actual flow of the evening. Guests arrive. The hall opens. The waltz begins. Then the formal mood changes to a loud, sweaty party.

Before the event I pulled references, mapped a simple story arc, and prepped a shortlist of key beats: entrance, dress and detail moments, first waltz, crowd reactions, transition to DJ, and full party.

How I filmed it

I used the gimbal for anything that needed a polished look: exterior and entrance shots, room reveals, and the classical dances. Smooth tracking moves and slow push-ins helped keep it elegant. Once the drinks and bass kicked in, I went handheld. The contrast between floating gimbal moves and handheld mirrors how the night actually felt.

I shot a lot. About one terabyte of footage. That gave me options for cutaways and reactions but also meant a heavy sift in post. I love shaping these nights into short films that feel true to the experience. If you want an aftermovie with a strong story and a clean finish, get in touch.
